BIOGRAPHY

IVAN CIVIC - Born 1979 in Sarajevo, BiH; lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Ivan Civic studied at the Braunschweig Arts Academy under Marina Abramovic and has already been active for several years in the international art scene thanks to his participations in events at some of the most prestigious art spaces in the world (P.S.1, New York; Irish Museum for Modern Art, Dublin; Marta Herford; Galleria Civica, Trento; Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; Venice Biennale; etc.).

The work of Ivan Civic (performance video installation photography and design) concentrates on the analysis of society and its structures, searching for limits inside conventional unions (like the family nucleus, relationship, cultural and intellectual enviroments) that form an effectively real bond. Through the use of icons, symbols and fetishes instinctively obtained from the domestic circles (intimate, private) and from the public scene (fashion, advertisement, hyper-beauty, status symbols), the artist expresses mechanisms, dynamics, contradictions and conflicts of any kind of relational enviroment.

Through extreme self critical and humorous attitude, captivating images and sophisticated objects (reinterpreted in a creative personal manner rather than taken and presented as “ready made“), Civic intends to bring to life the fact that each one, in his own way, assumes an ambivalent role inside of his own family nucleus, assuming alternatly the guise of a victim and that of an executioner, not only in a precise family situation but, in general, in affectionate and social relationships that are interweaved every day. The purpose is to solicit in the spectator a direct interaction of the artistic experience and simultaneusly of the emotional tension that the artist, through his energetic actions and imagination, aims to solicit.
