“Minimanl Civic retrospective”
Duration: 6 hours, 2004
Performed: June 6th, 2004
Exhibition: PS1 Summer exhibition, PS1, New York, USA
Curator: Jimena Blasquéz
The minimal Civic retrospective was performed in the restroom of New York's famous PS1 exhibition space. I minimalised myself, constrained by the impossible conditions I was put under. The conditions were: „You can exhibit here but you will get no money, no funding, no production costs, no assistance!“
I took the toilette and built a tiny pedestal /plynth and made it be my speech desk. I also taped some performance relicts, from other works of mine, on the bathroom walls and garbage binns. The toilette I was performing in was unisex, so all genders would come in to „relieve“ themselves, and as they would enter the space, they would be „pleasently“ surprised to see somebody kindly greeting them and talking about his work. It was an interesting experience, especially considering the fact that people would enter without thinking they would be confronted with art speeches.
