“Saving”

Duration: 6 hours, 2004

Performed: November 4th, 2004
Exhibition: Cherrypickers, the Churches in Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany
Curator: Pater Friedhelm Mennekes

I decided to distribute lifesaving blankets to the visitors of the Cherrypickers exhibition in the Churches of Braunschweig. Lifesaving blankets are used to wrap around people who have suffered a car accident, a ski accident or other. It can either protect you from heat or cold. It all depends on which side you turn them: the golden side upwards if you wish to warm up and the silver side upwards if you wish to cool down. The symbol of this blanket in the Churches was interesting and disturbing... What were people going to protect themselves from inside the Church? Everybody who recieved a blanket was very happy and most people decided to turn the golden part of the blankets upwards... I guess because they thought it looked better. Most of them also wrapped them around the neck and used them as capes. The sound these blankets make is also unique. You can hear it in the video. The public looked like weired icons or dead holy ghost wandering around the Church. And here too, I wish to leave the interpretation to the reader...
